In just an hour's drive from Rotorua, and our Rotorua motel accommodation, you will reach another tourist magnet, Lake Taupo. Australasia's largest fresh water lake spreads out before you, with views of three magnificent snowcapped volcanoes in the distance.
Water sports and fishing are popular and boats of every kind are available for charter. With a lake the size of Singapore, it's not hard to find a secluded bay for sunbathing or a family picnic.
The waters around Taupo are world famous for trout fishing. You can book a guided tour on the lake or to fly fish at a land bound spot. Many areas are only accessible by boat, so if you are looking for total peace and quiet, this is the way to go.
Please note that there is a maximum of trout that may be caught per day and size limits are in place. You must have a license to fish here, which can be purchased from shops, marinas or tour operators.
A must-see in the region is Tongariro National Park, where the three volcanoes stand. Ruapehu, Ngauruhoe and Tongariro offer fantastic winter sports and tramping opportunities so if you have the time, go out and explore.
A great way to see the National Park is to take a chairlift 2000m up the Whakapapa ski area for lunch on the deck of New Zealand's highest restaurant.
